[#TravelTuesday] The Latest Travel & Tourism News, Tips/Tools incl. Guide to Getting a REAL ID Before May 7th ⤵️

, 2025

Hey, Reader! 👋 What's new with you?

As often happens with us, we changed our destination for last weekend's trip. Instead of going to DE, we headed SW to Abingdon, VA. With its rich history (chartered in 1778), fantastic food scene, and plenty of outdoor activities, there was a lot to love! Before starting the long drive home on Sunday afternoon, we took a short but scenic ride on the Virginia Creeper Trail—a perfect way to end our trip.

Now, we're in the early stages of planning our summer getaway. While we have a few destinations in mind, we're going to take a more budget-savvy approach and let the deal determine the destination. We really enjoyed last summer's trip to the Pacific NW, but we went during peak tourist and Alaskan cruise season, so it cost a more than we had expected.

Speaking of upcoming travel, if you're planning to fly domestically anytime after May 7th, don't forget about Real ID requirements. Not sure if you need one or how to get it? Check out the Travel Tip of the Week ⤵️ for all the details!

Now let's get into the latest...

TRAVEL TIP OF THE WEEK
REAL ID 2025: What It Is and How to Get One

Starting May 7, 2025, a REAL ID or another federally accepted form of identification will be required to board domestic flights, enter certain federal buildings, and access military bases. Without one, you may be denied entry or travel. A REAL ID is a state-issued driver's license or identification card that meets stricter security standards set by the federal government.

Steps to Get a REAL ID

  • Check if You Need One – If you plan to fly domestically or enter federal facilities after May 7, 2025, and don’t have another federally accepted ID, you’ll need a REAL ID.

    Other federally accepted IDs include:
    • U.S. passport or passport card
    • U.S. military ID (active duty, retired, dependent)
    • DHS-issued Global Entry, NEXUS, or SENTRI card
    • Foreign government-issued passport (for international travelers)
    • Federally recognized tribal-issued photo ID
  • Visit Your State’s DMV Website – Requirements and procedures vary by state, so check your local DMV for specific details.
  • Gather Required Documents: You’ll typically need:
    • Proof of Identity & Legal Presence (e.g., passport, birth certificate)
    • Proof of Social Security Number (e.g., Social Security card, W-2)
    • Two Proofs of Residency (e.g., utility bill, lease agreement)
    • Name Change Documents (if applicable, e.g., marriage certificate)
  • Apply in Person – You must visit a DMV or licensing office in person to present your documents and complete the application.
  • Pay the Fee – Fees vary by state but usually range from $10 to $50.
  • Receive Your REAL ID – Processing times vary, but you should receive your new ID within a few weeks.

To avoid last-minute delays, apply for your REAL ID well before the May 7, 2025, deadline. Visit www.dhs.gov/real-id for official information.
